PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
This week’s Player of the Week goes to Alex Horwath, goalkeeper for VSI Tampa Bay FC. He made his debut with his new club on Saturday in Tempe, Arizona against Phoenix FC. Despite losing 1-0, Horwath made some great saves against the Wolves but Netinho’s goal was too much for him to handle. He was able to redeem himself yesterday in his second match of the season, at the Los Angeles Blues. The former Wilmington Hammerheads and New York Red Bulls keeper recorded a clean sheet including big saves in the last ten minutes to hold off the Blues to help earn his club a 1-0 victory.
4/2- VSI Tampa Bay FC 1-0 Los Angeles Blues
3/30- VSI Tampa Bay FC 0-1 Phoenix FC
3/30- Orlando City SC 3-2 Tampa Bay Rowdies
3/30- Charlotte Eagles 0-3 Atlanta Silverbacks
3/30- Carolina Railhawks 0-1 Charleston Battery
3/30- Harrisburg City Islanders 2-0 UMBC
PLAYER TO WATCH:
With Orlando City opening their season this weekend at Phoenix FC, then going to Los Angeles later in the week, one player stood out to me. This player is from the west coast and is former member of the LA Blues, his name is Bryan Burke. The Newport Beach native signed with Orlando City this off-season and is a key addition to a very strong Lions side. Burke was the USL PDL Championship game MVP in 2010 and has potential to have a great professional soccer career where Orlando City is just the beginning. Watch to see how well the O-town back line plays against Phoenix FC in their first ever meeting and a homecoming against the Blues.
A LOOK AHEAD:
Richmond Kickers will be hosting the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at City Stadium in both clubs 2013 season opener on Friday. Orlando City Soccer Clubs opens their 2013 campaign on Saturday at Phoenix FC. On Sunday, VSI Tampa Bay FC completes their west coast swing with a tough test at JELD-WIN Field against the Portland Timbers reserves.
In next week’s edition of the USL PRO log, we will begin posting our staff’s predictions for matches this season and a table to keep track of who had the most results correct. For each correct score, they will receive three points. For each correct result they will receive one point. Currently the leader is Mike Buytas who correctly predicted the game in Phoenix, followed by Josh Brokaw who got the correct result for the first two matches but not the score. Then followed by Ben Cole, Chad Hollingsworth, and Jason Robertson who all got the result in Phoenix correct and well I am off to a slow start with zero points so far.
