The Chase; Week 30

Last week saw the Philadelphia Union ensure the Eastern Conference playoff race stayed interesting for at least another week. The win not only kept the U in mathematical contention for the time being while Houston remained closer to the “chasing” crowd than the “secured” crowd. Columbus also failed to take advantage of a chance to leap frog Houston into the pole position for the last playoff spot. Montreal and New England were able to add single points to their total, inching ever closer to an early end to the 2012 campaign.

In the West Vancouver held the pack at bay with a draw against Colorado. Every point for Vancouver and any dropped points from the chasing bunch is a good week up North. Portland and Chivas failed to earn any points while FC Dallas had an off week.

Eastern Conference Standings
Rank – Team – Games Played – Points – Games this week
5. Houston Dynamo – 30 – 46 – 9/29 v. New England
6. Columbus Crew – 30 – 45 – 9/29 v. Philadelphia
7. Montreal Impact – 31 – 40 – None
8. Philadelphia Union – 28 – 30 – 9/29 @Columbus
9. New England Revolution – 30 – 29 – 9/29 @Houston

Houston has a chance to end the playoff hopes of two cities with a win against New England. Philadelphia will look to play spoiler for a second week putting a dent in Columbus’ playoff push this weekend. Montreal sits out the weekend as the others (except for the Union) will all be on 31 games after this weekend. The Union still have two games in hand.

Western Conference Standings
Rank – Team – Games Played – Points – Games this week
5. Vancouver Whitecaps – 30 – 38 – 9/29 v.Seattle
6. FC Dallas – 30 – 36 – 9/29 @San Jose
7. Colorado Rapids – 30 – 30 – 9/30 v.Los Angeles
8. Portland Timbers – 30 – 29 – 9/29 v.D.C.
9. Chivas USA – 29 – 28 – 9/29 v. Salt Lake

This could be a very difficult week for teams needing to pick up points in the West. All of those in The Chase are matched up with teams currently in playoff spots and looking to clinch. A Vancouver win will end the slim chances of the Timbers. Chivas and Colorado will need to keep winning to have any chance as well. The real battle is between Vancouver and Dallas and if the Whitecaps fail to take the maximum amount from Seattle the could find themselves in a tie or even a point behind Dallas heading into the home stretch.
